From patriotism to gender roles: a sharply observed film from a small town in Russia, where the nation’s values seep into everyday life.

How does ideology turn into norms and values? For the residents of a remote industrial city in Russia, the answer is embedded in the many details that make up the humdrum of everyday life. Young girls learn about discipline in ballet classes, while young boys are sent to the army to become men. From patriotism to gender roles: ‘Immortal’ is a precisely observed essay, told in images instead of words. Ksenia Okhapkina does not draw any conclusions for us, but lets us form our own impression of the dangerous effects of ideology in practice. An important and cinematic film, which won the main prize at the film festival in Karlovy Vary.
