Toil and trouble and sisterly solidarity. Training to become a Filipino au pair in a film where we are on the young women’s side.

In the Philippines, an au pair academy prepares young women for life among wealthy people abroad. Here, they practice housekeeping, but also dealing with situations they may be exposed to as au pairs, such as being scolded by their employers. ‘Overseas’ gives us an insight into a women’s community, which contains both political conversations and a primer in basic rights, but which also shows the harsh and lonely sides of the reality that awaits the young women after they leave their families and friends to look after the homes of other people.
